Packing for Summer Camp Do's and Don'ts

A simple guide for a great week at Camp Shipshewana

Getting ready for camp is part of the adventure. A little preparation helps campers feel confident, comfortable, and ready to enjoy everything the week has to offer.

Please Note:

Adventure campers will receive a specific gear list after registration, but the guide below will help you start packing for a successful week at camp.

Clothing & Everyday Essentials

Camp days are active and outdoors, so comfortable clothing is key. Pack items that allow campers to move, explore, and enjoy time outside.

Suggested items include:

  • Modest clothing*

  • Jacket or sweatshirt

  • Outdoor clothing suitable for hiking and activities

  • Wacky Wednesday outfit

  • Comfortable everyday shoes

  • Tennis shoes

  • Sandals or Crocs

  • One-piece swimsuit

  • Rainwear

  • Water bottle

Personal Items

A few basic personal items will help campers stay comfortable throughout the week.

  • Towel and washcloth

  • Toiletries

  • Sunscreen

  • Insect repellent

  • Laundry bag

  • Bedding and pillow

  • Flashlight

Camp Life Items

These small items can make the camp experience even more meaningful.

  • Bible

  • Notebook and pen or pencil

  • Disposable camera

  • Enthusiasm

  • Smiles

Clothing Guidelines

To help maintain a respectful and Christ-centered environment, campers are asked to follow our modest clothing guidelines.

Inappropriate clothing includes items that:

  • Expose the midriff or undergarments

  • Promote alcohol, tobacco, or profanity

  • Display obscenity, vulgarity, or violence

What Not to Bring

Our goal is to create a safe and distraction-free environment where campers can focus on friendships, faith, and the outdoor experience.

We understand that being unplugged can feel unfamiliar in a connected world, but this space away from screens allows campers to fully engage with the camp community.

Please leave the following items at home:

  • Excessive snacks

  • Gum

  • Paintball guns and balls

  • Sharp objects or knives

  • Skateboards

  • Posters

  • Fireworks

  • Lighters

  • Cell phones

  • Apple Watches

  • Digital games

  • Electronic devices

  • Radios

By packing thoughtfully and leaving distractions behind, campers are able to experience everything camp has to offer—new friendships, outdoor adventure, and meaningful moments growing in faith.
